Poor Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene is one of the most common cause of bad breath, this can be from not clean your mouth properly such as not scrubbing your tongue properly as the tongue has lots of rough surfaces that can accumulate food particles we eat.
Zenker's Diverticulum
Zenker’s diverticulum, you have a pouch in the back of your throat. The pouch makes it hard for you to swallow food and also result in accumulation of ingested food particles within the pouch causing bad breath. Zenker’s diverticulum occurs due to weakening of muscles ( cricopharyngeus muscles) and typically affects the elderly population and it do develops over time, making it a common cause of bad breath in the elderly.
Oral Or Sinus Infection
Oral infection can also cause bad breath, as the bacterial can result in fermentation of ingested food material, releasing offensive smell from the mouth.
Following a Low-Caloric Diet
Having a low-calorie diet, can cause bad breath, because the body mostly uses carbohydrate as its major source of energy, when the body can not get enough carbohydrate to provide enough energy for the body, it turns to other sources for energy production, such as break down of muscles and also fat breakdown. When the body starts using fat as source of energy, lots of ketone are being produced and ketone body do have offensive smell, which can result to bad breath. This occurs mostly in those who are obsessed at needing to lose weight, making them to put themselves on extreme low calorie diet, it can also occur in those with diabetes as the body can not use carbohydrate properly causing the body to utilize fat as source of energy.
Now that we have known some of the most common causes of bad breath, let's look at how we can eliminate it at home in our comfort place.
What Are The Common Home Remedy One Can Apply?
Even when undergoing treatment for the various causes of bad breath, it will take time for complete resolution of the bad breath. Here are some simple home remedy one can apply.
- Dissolve allum in water and gaggle for 3 - 4 minutes after brushing twice or three times daily. The allum is a potent deodorant.
- Mixe allum with little amount of vinegar in water and gaggle for 3 - 4 minutes after brushing twice or three times daily. The vinegar helps reduce the high alkaline taste of the allum and also act as bactericidal.
- Mixe allum with little amount of baking soda in water and gaggle for 1-2 minutes twice or three times daily.
- After doing one of the above methods, you can then gaggle again with mouth wash, such as Colgate or another mouth wash you have at home for best result.
The allum might cause you to have nausea if ingested due to its high alkaline content that dilutes the stomach acid so remember to mix with vinegar and baking soda to dilute the alkaline content of the allum.
Remember to always brush your mouth 2 - 3 times daily while applying the above method to achieve excellent result.
These methods will not resolve the underlying cause of the bad breath, as it will only eliminate the bad breath. So consult your physician to know the cause of the bad breath in other to have a complete resolution of it.
